Virginia: five high school students charged with sexting

Five high school students from Rocky Mount, Virginia have been charged with felony counts related to cell phone-transmitted pornographic images. These charges were filed after a female high school student took a male student's phone into a bathroom to take pictures of herself.

It's not clear what the consequences of the felony pornography charges might be but the chances of the students being convicted on the charges are not high.

As there are no Virginia or federal laws dealing with sexting, the tendency is not to file pornography charges for sexting, as such charges are too harsh, but rather to file misdemeanor obscenity charges instead.

Several such "sexting" cases in Virginia have resulted in felony charges in recent months.
