New research on cyberbullying among college students in the US
Ikuko Aoyama, a doctoral candidate in educational psychology at Baylor University, recently presented her research on sex differences in cyberbullying at an American Educational Research Association conference.
Some of the more interesting findings of her research are:
- Unlike in traditional bullying, there are no marked differences between male and females in the types of bullying. This is due to the fact that in cyberbullying, physical strength, or age or sex, is not a factor as there is no face-to-face interaction.
- Technology is an “equalizer”, allowing people to create alternative identities, so the rules of traditional bullying no longer apply.
- The effect of cyberbullying on the victim has not changed from the psychological perspective, from that of traditional bullying.
- Colleges and Universities in the US have not been limiting cyberbullying or taking preventive actions.
