Pennsylvania: proposed change in sexting legislation

Republican Representative Seth Grove, proposes that the punishment for sexting should be lightened for first offenders, from a felony to a second degree misdemeanor. The proposed change will apply only to those ages 13 to 17, which are first offenders and convicted of "sexting" in any form.

Sexting images of children under age 18, is currently illegal and considered a felony. Convicted offenders are considered sexual predators and must register under the state's Megan's Law. The reason for this suggestion is that under these laws, established in the 1990’s; a student's “stupid” or seemingly innocent mistake can become tragic. It can affect their chances of getting into a University, getting a good job, receiving student aid among others.
