Real life stories

Cyberbullying can have devastating consequences. Suicide is one. Cases of young kids committing suicide as a consequence of cyberbullying and sexting are increasingly coming to the public’s attention.

Following are a few of these tragic cases. As you read them think about your own children.

Tyler Clementi
A shy 18-year-old university freshman with a passion for playing the violin, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge.

Jessica Logan
A petite, blond-haired, blue-eyed Ohio high school senior who committed suicide after a nude photo of herself she sent to her boyfriend was distributed around the school.

Sarah Lynn Butler
A seventh grader from Hardy, Arkansas, just voted Queen for her upcoming Fall Festival committed suicide after she was teased at school, and later on received bullying messages on her MySpace page.

Phoebe Prince
A 15-year-old Irish immigrant from Massachusetts hanged herself two days before the winter cotillion dance at her school, because she was cyberbullied.

 
Ryan Halligan
A 13-year-old student from Vermont, committed suicide after cyberbullying.

Rachael Neblett
A 17-year old high school student from Kentucky took her life after receiving threatening messages on her MySpace account.

Hope Witsell
A 13-year-old who grew up in Sundance, Florida, who forwarded a nude photo of herself to a boy she liked. That image found its way to other students, resulting in name calling, cyberbullying and Hope’s suicide.
